Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering shaft supporting structure of an automobile that can suppress a steering shaft from contacting with a vehicle body when an instrument panel member to which the steering shaft is attached is assembled in the vehicle body. SOLUTION: The steering shaft supporting structure of the automobile includes a steering shaft 31 attached to an instrument panel member 21 at an upper end 31a thereof and provided with a universal joint 37. The steering shaft 31 is attached before the assembling of the instrument panel member 21 to the vehicle body. The structure includes a pedal release preventing structure 51 attached to the instrument panel member 21 and for preventing a release of an operating pedal 9 when the operating pedal 9 is released at the time of collision, and a bracket 57 provided to the pedal release preventing structure 51 and to which a shaft lower part 31b of the steering shaft 31 is temporarily attached when the instrument panel member 21 is attached to the vehicle body.
