Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waveguide fiber preform, which gives an additional waveguide structure variable and is useful for production of a dispersion compensating/controlling waveguide, and a fiber, and to provide a method for producing the waveguide preform and the fiber. SOLUTION: In the optical waveguide fiber preform containing a clad glass layer disposed in a core glass area and on the core glass, the clad glass layer is divided into segments positioned along the axis of the preform, and the density of clad glass is varied in the direction, which is called as a preform axis, parallel to the core area so that the clad glass density is varied from a higher value to a lower value or from a lower value to a higher value from one segment to another segment.
