Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor light emitting element which sufficiently improves light extraction efficiency by ensuring sufficient emission area, and preventing leak of light, and also to provide a method for manufacturing it. SOLUTION: The semiconductor light emitting element has: a first semiconductor layer; a second semiconductor layer; an active layer; a first electrode on the second semiconductor layer; an insulating film which covers the second semiconductor layer, the active layer, and first electrode; an second electrode which covers the side surface of the first semiconductor layer, and a part of the insulating film; a first connection electrode with a thickness thicker than a total thickness of the insulating film and the second electrode; a second connection electrode which is connected to the second electrode and is formed so as to surround and be separated from the first connection electrode; and a first filling layer with which a gap between the first connection electrode and the second connection electrode is filled.
