Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit which raises optical efficiency. SOLUTION: The backlight unit includes first and second substrates 110, 171 formed to face each other, a first electrode 120 formed on the first substrate, a second electrode 140 arranged so as to be electrically isolated from the first electrode, an electron emission source 150 formed by electrically connected with the first electrode, a phosphor layer 175 formed on the second substrate and arranged at a location facing to the electron emission source, a third electrode 173 for accelerating an electron emitted from the electron emission source facing to the phosphor layer, and a wire grid polarizing plate 180 formed on one side of the second substrate and polarizing light emitted from the phosphor layer.
