Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve light use efficiency of a light emitting diode in a compact liquid crystal display device and make the device thin. SOLUTION: A flexible wiring substrate 40 is connected to a terminal part 12 formed on a TFT substrate 10, and a flexible wiring substrate 46 for a light emitting diode is folded back and extends on the backside of the backlight. The light emitting diode 70 is disposed on the flexible wiring substrate 46 for a light emitting diode in a manner that it is pressed against an edge of a light guide plate 80. Since the light emitting diode 70 and the edge of the light guide plate 80 are brought close contact to each other, the use efficiency of the light from the light emitting diode 70 is improved. Furthermore, since the light emitting diode 70 and the light guide plate 80 facing the light emitting diode 70 are located outside the TFT substrate 10, the overall thickness of the liquid crystal display device can be made small.
