Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing optically active mandelic acids having high purity and useful as pharmaceutical and agrochemical raw materials, liquid crystal materials and optical resoluting agents. SOLUTION: Crystals of objective optically active mandelic acids can be produced in high chemical purity, optical purity and yield by hydrolyzing optically active mandelonitriles with a mineral acid, carrying out phase separation of the obtained aqueous solution of the optically active mandelic acids in the presence of an organic solvent immiscible with water and scarcely dissolving the optically active mandelic acids, and performing alkali-treatment of a dimer derived from the optically active mandelic acids and existing in the organic solvent phase obtained by the phase separation.
