Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical element having a reflecting film having low reflectance over a wide wavelength band. SOLUTION: The semiconductor optical element comprises: an active layer; a multilayer structure including a waveguide layer including two clad layers sandwiching the active layer; and a multilayer reflecting film formed on at least one end face part of a pair of opposite end face parts of the multilayer structure. The total sum Σnidiof the product nidiof refractive index niof each film of the multilayer reflecting film and the film thickness disatisfies the relation of Σnidi>λ/4, in the wavelength λ of light propagating the waveguide layer, and moreover, the value Δλ/λ obtained by dividing the continued wavelength band width Δλ including the wavelength λ, which is within the range of -1% to +2.0%, by the wavelength λ on the basis of the reflectance R (λ) when the reflectance is the wavelength λ is 0.062 or more.
