Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display panel capable of attaining improved panel luminance by raising conversion efficiency of discharged energy to visible light and improving panel life by improving a protective layer which protects a dielectric glass layer. SOLUTION: Light-emitting efficiency of ultraviolet rays, conversion efficiency of phosphor, and panel luminance for the plasma display panel are improved so that a discharge gas is a mixture of helium and xenon and the content of xenon is 10 vol% or more to less than 100 vol% and its enclosed pressure is set to be 500-760 Torr. The protective layer made of fine alkali-earth oxide which is oriented to a (100) or (110) plane is arranged on the surface of the dielectric glass layer. This protective layer can be formed by a heat CVD method, a plasma CVD method, or an evaporation method for evaporating while an ion beam or an electron beam is irradiated, and the panel life can be improved since the protective layer has high sputtering resistance and a big protection effect for the dielectric glass layer.
