Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp capable of preventing the scattering or falling of broken pieces even in the case that an outer tube bulb is broken while suppressing the deterioration of optical characteristics with no limitation of a lamp species. SOLUTION: In the high pressure discharge lamp 1 in which a protective layer 15 composed of a heat resistant resin of a visible average transmissivity of 90% or higher, and a tensile strength of 80 MPa or larger, and coated so that a thickness becomes 10 μm or smaller is formed on an outer surface of the outer tube bulb 13 as a translucent glass base material with no limitation of a species of a light-emitting tube 2 while suppressing the deterioration of a light output, and even in the case that the outer tube bulb 13 is broken, the scattering or falling of the broken pieces of the outer tube bulb 13 becomes possible by the protective layer 15.
