Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform more accurate adjustment of printing process parameter by measuring media in a printer by a transfer subsystem. SOLUTION: The printer includes an intermediate imaging member 12, a transfer roller 94 located proximate to the intermediate imaging member 12, a displaceable linkage for moving the transfer roller 94 to the intermediate imaging member 12, and a controller coupled to the linkage. The controller is configured to compute a media thickness from a measured movement of the transfer roller 94 from the first position to the position where a transfer nip is formed to the intermediate imaging member 12 without an image substrate 404 being in the transfer nip, and a measured movement of the transfer roller 94 from the first position to the position where the transfer nip is formed with an image substrate 404 in the transfer nip between the transfer roller 94 and the intermediate imaging member 12.
