PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water heater, reducing space and mass required for installation, having good energy efficiency and light-weighted. SOLUTION: This heat pump water heater includes: a compressor; a first heat exchanger for performing heat exchange between a refrigerant discharged from the compressor and water introduced from a water pipe connected to a water supply pipe; a heat pump circuit having a pressure reducer and a second heat exchanger provided between the pressure reducer and the compressor; an instantaneous direct hot water supply circuit for elevating the temperature of water using the first heat exchanger to supply hot water to a faucet or a shower; a hot water supply tank for assisting the supply of hot water to the faucet or the shower while the instantaneous direct hot water supply circuit builds up; and a mixing means for mixing hot water heated through the first heat exchanger and hot water stored in the hot water supply tank. A pipe diverging from a pipe directing to the faucet and the shower to direct to a bathtub is provided with a hot water pouring solenoid valve. In opening the hot water pouring valve to fill the bathtub with hot water, the heat pump circuit is operated without using the hot water in the hot water supply tank, and the temperature of water introduced from the water supply pipe is elevated by the first heat exchanger to pour the hot water into the bathtub.
