Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition for modulating effects on cells of a protein selected from among the group consisting of growth and differentiation factor 8 (GDF-8) and bone morphogenetic protein 11 (BMP-11), and treating a non-degenerative nervous system disorder. SOLUTION: The composition for treating the non-degenerative nervous system disorder includes follistatin identified as a molecule capable of binding to activin or a functional fragment thereof. The composition is preferably associated with traumatic or chromatic injury to the spinal cord, or to the nerve or muscle system, particularly infection, vascular disorder, trauma, metabolic derangement, congenital anomaly, or tumor as the disorder.
