Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a useful production method for synthesizing four optical isomers of muscol and determining absolute configuration thereof, a perfume useful for perfume industry by judging the fragrance of the optical isomers and further a new perfume composition and cosmetic having excellent fragrance. SOLUTION: The method for producing (1R, 3R)-muscol and (1S, 3S)-muscol is characterized by including a process of reducing a (±)-muscone with an alkali metal salt of tri-secondary-butylborohydride to prepare a (±)-tans-muscol, a process of asymmetric esterification of the resultant (±)-trans-muscol by acting an acylating reagent and a hydrolase to prepare an acylated (1R, 3R)-muscol and (1S, 3S)-muscol, and a process of hydrolyzing the acylated compound with an acid or an alkali.
