Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which suppresses wasteful consumption of consumable articles and deterioration of components without decreasing printing throughput when an amount of remaining paper has become equal to or smaller than a predetermined amount, and to provide a control method. SOLUTION: While successively conveying sheets of paper from one paper feed opening, the image forming apparatus according to the present embodiment estimates remaining amount of paper in the paper feed opening. If the estimated amount of remaining paper has become equal to or below a predetermined threshold value, the apparatus conveys sheets of paper from another paper feed opening in addition to the paper feed opening in order to obtain time for detecting presence/absence of paper in the paper feed opening.
