Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording and reproducing device with a thin-film magnetic head having microwave magnetic exciting function, which writes a data signal with high accuracy in a magnetic recording medium having a large magnetic coercive force without heating. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording and reproducing device includes a metal housing 10 and a thin-film magnetic head having a write magnetic field production unit and a resonance magnetic field production unit. The write magnetic field production unit produces, in response to a write signal, a write magnetic field to be applied into the magnetic recording layer, and the resonance magnetic field production unit produces, in response to a microwave excitation signal, a resonance magnetic field with a frequency equal to or in a range near a ferromagnetic resonance frequency FR of a the magnetic recording layer. The apparatus further includes a transmission unit for feeding the microwave excitation signal generated by the microwave signal generation unit to the resonance magnetic field production unit and for feeding the write signal generated by the write signal generation unit to the write magnetic field production unit, and a plurality of metal ribs 18 for forming a plurality of cavities 19, each of the plurality of cavities having a rectangular horizontal section shape and having dimensions to produce no resonance at a frequency of the microwave excitation signal.
