Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an igniter commonly using a spark discharge ignition system capable of completely burning a mixture gas of fuel and air while growing a generated flame nucleus, and the microwave plasma ignition system having compatibility with a conventional ordinary ignition plug in terms of a shape and can be mounted on a conventional engine easily. SOLUTION: The igniter commonly using the spark discharge ignition system and the microwave plasma ignition system is composed of an ignition plug whose center electrode conductor for spark discharging and a conductor for feeding a microwave current are formed of common or individual coaxial conductors, a microwave generating circuit to generate microwaves fed to a microwave input terminal of the ignition plug, an ignition circuit to generate a high voltage for spark ignition, and an ignition control circuit to control the output timing of the microwave generating circuit and the ignition circuit, wherein the tip of the ignition plug constitutes an antenna protruding into a combustion chamber of the engine and emitting microwaves, and its shape is spiral.
