Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for forming a high-quality image by reducing the misalignment between a toner image and a recording medium. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus for forming an image on a recording medium comprises: a forming means which forms a toner image including an image forming area having the same size as that of the recording medium and an excessive toner area formed outside the image forming area; an image supporting means which supports the toner image formed by the forming means; a transfer means which transfers the toner image from the image supporting means to the recording medium; a detection means which detects a length in a sub-scanning direction of a part of the toner image adhered to the transfer means during the transfer of the toner image from the image supporting means to the recording medium, or a part of the toner image formed on the recording medium, which is different from the above part; and a control means which controls an image forming condition so that the center position of the toner image is aligned with the center position of the recording medium based on a difference between the detection result of the detection means and a preset length.
