Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp and a backlight, which do not cause scrap solder and is difficult to break up adhesions between a solder layer and a lead line. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp includes: a glass bulb 1 having a discharge space 11 inside; a lead line 32 that is sealed and fixated on an end of the glass bulb 1 and has an outer end side directed to an outside of the glass bulb 1; a metal conductor 4 provided covering an end of the glass bulb 1; and a solder layer 5 formed so as to make conduction between the lead line 32 outside the glass bulb 1 and the metal conductor 4. After the outer end side of the lead line 32 is substantially aligned with the metal conductor 4, a portion associated therewith is dipped in solder to form the solder layer 5 only on an outer end side of the metal conductor 4.
