Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object detecting device which does not have any limitations with respect to its detectable object, and is capable of detecting the position of an object. SOLUTION: Ultrasonic sensors 21-24 each having an element D for transmitting a transmission wave and elements A, B, C for receiving reflected waves, are arranged on a rear bumper 7. When the ultrasonic sensor 21 transmits a transmission wave, the directivities of the elements A, B provided in the ultrasonic sensors 22-24 are controlled to wide angles. A distance up to an obstruction is found by the time difference between the time of transmission and the time of reception. Moreover, a horizontal azimuth of the obstruction P is found by the phase difference between received signals at the elements A, B, and a vertical azimuth is found by the phase difference between signals at the elements A, C. Consequently, an obstruction detection range can be widened since a reflected-wave receiving range widens. Moreover, the position of the obstruction can be detected with high accuracy, since the horizontal and vertical positions of the obstruction can be detected. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
