Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus in which its depth is shortened while preventing occurrence of vertical bright and dark and dark stripes, and the configuration of an optical system is simplified. SOLUTION: When successively switching images to be outputted to a transmission type liquid crystal display panel 7 from a left-eye image to a right-eye image, a lighting control of lines of the surface light source 15 is performed for every one-line light irradiation unit 29 in accordance with respective images. The light from the surface light source 15 is alternately emitted toward the right-eye direction and the left-eye direction through a fresnel lens 19, then, the right-eye image and the left-eye image are alternately displayed. The light propagating toward the right-eye direction and the light propagating toward the left-eye direction are classified as odd-numbered lines and even-numbered lines, accordingly, the vertical bright and dark stripes can never occur. The surface light source 15 is disposed on the rear side of the image display apparatus, and the fresnel lens 19 is disposed therebetween, then, the light from the surface light source 15 can be guided in a predetermined direction, then, the shape thickness of the apparatus can be reduced and the optical system can be simplified.
