Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To locally reduce luminance without relying upon the constitution of a light source element. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal panel 11 for dimming limits a transmission light amount emitted from a light source 1 to locally reduce the luminance of the light emitted from the light source 1 in the same plane. Thus, the luminance is locally reduced without dividedly arranging the light source itself in many regions or without controlling the amount of light emission of the light source itself. Because a high contrast ratio is not required in the liquid crystal panel 11 for dimming as compared with a liquid crystal panel for ordinary video display, a transmission light amount ratio CR of a pair of polarizers constituting the liquid crystal panel 11 for dimming is intentionally reduced as compared with the ordinary liquid crystal panel. Further, in order to set the transmission light amount ratio CR within the prescribed range, the degree of polarization of the pair of polarizers is intentionally deteriorated (reduced) to the necessary minimum as compared with the ordinary liquid crystal panel so as to be optimized. The transmittance is improved by intentionally deteriorating the degree of polarization. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
