Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for using the device which enable only one operator to check defective parts easily in a short amount of time and discriminate, even during operation, whether a rotary type variable resisting part is good, in a continuous casting machine where the rotary type variable resisting part and a servo amplifying part are separately placed. SOLUTION: In a circuit 10 for detecting the opening degree of a sliding nozzle 2 of a tundish 1 in the continuous casting machine, a signal output line has two systems of output destinations which are a connector plug 11 and a cable 21. The invented device for discriminating defective parts has a rotary type variable resistor 7 consisting of a slider which has a snap switch 18 as a switch changing over the output destination and is capable of freely changing the resistance value of an intermediate tap terminal 19b.
