PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more raise the yield of an aromatic carboxylic acid when an alkylaromatic compound is oxidized in a solvent containing water in the supercritical or the subcritical state to produce the aromatic carboxylic acid. SOLUTION: A method for producing the aromatic carboxylic acid comprises oxidizing the alkylaromatic compound. The method for producing the aromatic carboxylic acid is characterized by comprising a mixing step of mixing the alkylaromatic compound with the water in the supercritical or the subcritical state, and an oxidation reaction step of bringing the resultant mixture into contact with an oxidizing substance to obtain the aromatic carboxylic acid, wherein the mixing in the mixing step is carried out at ≥2,000 Reynolds number.
