Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sizing agent reducing aggregation, and destruction of emulsion caused from interaction with a cationic substance such as calcium etc., while maintaining characteristics of a copolymer composed of styrenes and (meth)acrylate as the main component, such as excellent emulsion stability, storage stability, and to provide a paper obtained by using the same. SOLUTION: The rosin based emulsion type sizing agent includes: a partial or total neutralized product (A') of the copolymer (A) having an anionic functional group which exhibits 0 to 3.0×10-5N/cm of difference between maximum and minimum value of surface tension in 1 wt.% aqueous solution of the neutralized product with 0-300° dH of hardness on the neutralized product of partial or total neutralization, 40-90 mg/KOH/g of hydroxyl value and 200-300 mgKOH/g of acid value; and a rosin based resin (B).
