PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To show a driver a reverse starting position for parking, which allows the driver to park a car by one reversing, in a form capable of being easily understood by the driver. SOLUTION: The parking assist device includes a lane width detecting circuit 12 for detecting the width of a traveling allowed area forward of a vehicle concerned with respect to the traveling direction of the vehicle, a vehicle position detecting circuit 11 for detecting a vehicle position, and a parking space detecting circuit 13 for detecting a target parking space. The device includes a parking allowed space calculating circuit 14 for calculating a reverse starting area allowing the vehicle to reach the predetermined target parking space, a vehicle posture flexibility determining circuit 15 for determining flexibility of the posture of the vehicle that is allowed from a start of the vehicle traveling rearward to an end of the rearward traveling, a degree-of-emphasis determining circuit 16 for determining a degree-of-emphasis of information to be presented to the driver according to the flexibility of the vehicle posture at a position included in the reverse starting area, and a display device 17 for presenting the driver the reverse starting area as information represented by the degree-of-emphasis.
