Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet separation mechanism capable of enhancing the separation performance of sheets to be fed, preventing any double feed of sheets even when the separation speed is increased, and preventing generation of wrinkles or folds in the sheets. SOLUTION: The sheet separation mechanism comprises a paper feed roller 19 for feeding sheets, a friction member 30 which is brought into contact with an outer circumferential surface of the paper feed roller 19 to prevent the feed of the sheets, an elastic member 31 with the friction member 30 being fitted thereto, a separation holder 32 for supporting the elastic member 31, an urging spring 33 which urges the separation holder 32 to the paper feed roller 19 side to bring the friction member 30 into contact with the paper feed roller 19, and a projecting piece 34 for increasing the pressing force of a part of a contact area of the friction member 30 in contact with the paper feed roller 19.
