Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably control a variable valve gear mechanism (VEL) of an engine in a hybrid vehicle. SOLUTION: When the hybrid vehicle receives an engine stop instruction while running, the hybrid vehicle stops the engine after changing a valve operating angle to a prescribed operating angle θ1 which allows a maximum rotation of the engine, using the variable valve gear mechanism (S1 to S3). After the engine is stopped, if a stop of the vehicle is expected, the valve operating angle is changed to a minimum operating angle θmin so as to be ready for a restart of the engine, while an electric motor temporarily cranks the engine (S4 to S6 through S9). If the hybrid vehicle receives an engine start instruction after the engine is stopped but before the vehicle is stopped, the rotation number after the engine is started is estimated, and the control is carried out according to the estimation (S5 to S10 through S13).
