Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical element allowing an optical waveguide to be set at a length suitable for high-speed optical transmission, and capable of being monolithically integrated; and an optical transmitter/receiver using it. SOLUTION: This semiconductor optical element is provided with: a reflector 7 formed on a semiconductor substrate 1 and comprising at least two types of semiconductor layers having refraction indexes different from each other; the optical waveguide 2 sandwiched between an upper clad layer 4 and a lower clad layer 3 formed on the reflector 7; a reflecting mirror 5 arranged at an angle of 45° with respect to a substrate 1 surface at least on one end surface of the optical waveguide 2; and an antireflection coating 6 formed on the back surface of the substrate 1 at a position facing the reflecting mirror 5.
