PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem: destruction of magnetic information occurs due to a minute flaw on a perpendicular magnetic recording medium caused by contact of a slider etc. with the perpendicular magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording medium 1 is composed of a soft magnetic layer 3, an alignment controlling layer 4 for alignment control, a first recording layer 5 and a second recording layer 6, a deformation layer 9 susceptible to slip deformation caused by the first recording layer 5, and a protective layer 7 on a substrate 2 mainly composed of glass or aluminum. The perpendicular magnetic recording medium 1 includes a structure to prevent the destruction of the magnetic information retained by the first recording layer 5 by absorbing shear force produced on the surface of the perpendicular magnetic recording medium 1 with slip deformation of the deformation layer 9, reducing the shear force transmitted to the first recording layer 5, and preventing the slip deformation of the first recording layer 5.
