Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing control apparatus featuring high response. SOLUTION: A spool valve 100 includes an advancing port 112 and a retarding port 114 communicating respectively with advancing and retarding chambers, and a supply port 116 for hydraulic fluid to be supplied. By moving a spool to the advancing position, the advancing port 112 is allowed to communicate with the supply port 116. By moving the spool to the retarding position, the retarding port 114 is allowed to communicate with the supply port 116. An advancing connection passage 220 and a retarding connection passage 240 formed both in the spool 130 connect between the ports 112 and 114 in the advancing position and the retarding position. A check valve 210 arranged in the advancing connection passage 220 allows a first directional hydraulic-fluid flow directing from the side of the retarding port 114 to the side of the advancing port 112 in the advancing position, and controls a second directional hydraulic-fluid flow of an opposite directional flow. A check valve 230 arranged in the retarding connection passage 240 allows the second directional hydraulic-fluid flow in the retarding position, and controls the first directional hydraulic-fluid flow.
