PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst which is used for producing alcohol by hydrogenating a carboxylic acid, has a high catalytic activity, and is industrially satisfied, and also to provide a method for producing the alcohol. SOLUTION: The catalyst for producing the alcohol by hydrogenating the carboxylic acid contains Co metal as the essential ingredient, contains one or more elements selected from a group consisting of Zr, Y, La, Ce, Si, Al, Sc and V as the first promoter component, and contains one or more elements selected from Pt and Pd as the second promoter component. In the catalyst for producing the alcohol, the crystal phase of the Co metal contains not less than 20% of a cubic phase. In the method for producing the alcohol, hydrogenation is performed by employing the carboxylic acid as a raw material and using the catalyst. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
