Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To construct an elevator to reduce an overhead dimension by providing on the upper part of an elevator car or a counterweight a rope guide device reducible in height dimension compared with a sheave. SOLUTION: The elevator has a hoistway 1; the elevator car 5 lifted within the hoistway 1; the counterweight 8 lifted interlocked with the elevator car 5 within the hoistway 1; and a driving device 2 having the sheave 3 provided at an upper part in the hoistway 1. A main rope 4 is wound onto the sheave 3 of the driving device 2 to suspend and lift the elevator car 5 and the counterweight 8. The rope guide devices 6 are provided at the upper parts of the elevator car 5 and counterweight 8 respectively, and the main rope 4 is wound onto the rope guide devices 6. The rope guide device 6 is a nonrotating type rope guide device having a sliding part of projecting circular arc shape formed of a polymeric material, on the surface which abuts on the main rope 4.
