PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact rolling bearing unit having a rolling bearing inserted and fitted into a housing and capable of preventing the occurrence of creep of an outer ring and to provide a method for fixing the rolling bearing. SOLUTION: This rolling bearing unit 1 is provided with the rolling bearing 10 having the outer ring 11, an inner ring 12, and a plurality of balls 13 arranged in the peripheral direction between the outer ring 11 and the inner ring 12 to roll freely and the housing 30 incorporating the rolling bearing 10 inserted and fitted into it. A cut-out section 20 is formed on an outer peripheral face 18 of the outer ring 11 of the rolling bearing 10, and a projecting part 34 matched with the cut-out section 20 of the rolling bearing 10 is formed on a fitting face 33 where the outer peripheral face 18 of the outer ring 11 of the rolling bearing 10 in the housing 30 is fitted. The rolling bearing 10 is inserted and fitted into the housing 30 while the projecting part 34 is engaged with the cut-out section 20. Retaining rings 40, 41 are mounted over both ends of a storage hole 31 and the outer peripheral face 18 of the outer ring 11 of the rolling bearing 10 inserted and fitted into the storage hole 31 while the projecting part 34 is engaged with the cut-out section 20.
