PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide particles that create permanent tissue markings, including, but not limited to, tattoos that have variable appearance properties; and methods for producing, implanting, altering and removing these variable appearance tissue markings. SOLUTION: Disclosed is an incident electromagnetic wave-retroreflective composition containing a liquid support and a plurality of particles, in which the particles comprise (i) a material having a refractive index of 1.6-2.4, and having (ii) a size about 1 to 10 times the wavelength of electromagnetic waves incident to the particles, and (iii) a shape at least partially retroreflective to electromagnetic waves incident to the particles.
