Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a molecular element which can be simply configured without using complicated chemical synthesis and can achieve very high speed operation and integration of extreme high density, and to provide a single molecule optical switch element and a functional element. SOLUTION: The molecular element has at least a zinc cytochrome (c) of one molecule, and by utilizing the transition of electrons between molecular orbits of the zinc cytochrome (c), electrons or holes are moved in the zinc cytochrome (c). The molecular orbits are, for instance, a first molecular orbit localized in a first amino acid residue of the zinc cytochrome (c) and a second molecular orbit localized in a second amino acid residue of the zinc cytochrome (c) and having maximum transition probability per unit time against the first molecular orbit. In this case, electrons or holes are moved between the first amino acid residue and the second amino acid residue. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
