Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information recording and reproducing apparatus which removes noise from other layers and improves quality of reproduction signal when reproducing a multi-layer recording medium. SOLUTION: The information recording and reproducing apparatus is provided with: a light source which emits a luminous flux to an information recording medium which has a plurality of information recording layers; an objective lens which condenses the luminous flux emitted from the light source and forms a condensation spot on the desired information recording layer of the information recording medium; a luminous flux split means to split a reflected light from the information recording medium to two directions; a first detection means for detecting the reflected light generated by reflection at a desired information recording layer of the information recording medium from a first reflected light split by a luminous flux split means and changes it into a first electric signal; a second detection means for detecting the reflected light generated by reflection at the information recording layer on the side of the objective lens adjacent to the desired information recording layer of the information recording medium from a second reflected light split by the luminous flux split means and changes it into a second electric signal; and a correction operation means to correct the first electric signal using the second electric signal.
