Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that can effectively prevent image deletion from occurring even when a low friction photoreceptor is used and can suppress wear on a photoreceptor surface, and to provide a method for cleaning a photoreceptor. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a photoreceptor 13; a charging roller 36; a developing unit 12 for developing a latent image formed on the surface of the photoreceptor 13 to form a toner image; and an intermediate transfer belt 14 onto which the toner image on the photoreceptor surface is transferred, wherein the apparatus carries out the photoreceptor cleaning operation in which the photoreceptor 13 and the intermediate transfer belt 14 are rotated in such a manner that a relative circumferential speed difference between the photoreceptor 13 and the intermediate transfer belt 14 is not less than 0.5% of the circumferential speed of the photoreceptor 13, while toner is interposed between the photoreceptor 13 and the intermediate transfer belt 14.
