Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a propulsion method of a tunnel excavator and a reaction force support device of a tunnel excavator, easily obtaining excavating reaction force and propulsion reaction force of the tunnel excavator. SOLUTION: In this propulsion method of the tunnel excavator 1, the tunnel excavator 1 is propelled by obtaining the reaction force in propelling the tunnel excavator on the whole peripheral surface of an inner surface 32 of a tunnel cavity part 31. The reaction force support device 10 of the tunnel excavator includes an outer peripheral surface 33 along the whole periphery of the inner surface 32 of the tunnel cavity part 31, wherein the reaction force in propelling the tunnel excavator 1 by the frictional force between the outer peripheral surface 33, the tunnel cavity part 31 and the inner surface 32 is obtained.
