Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the storage amount of reductant in an on-vehicle storage device, to be used for an automobile emission control system such as a SCR system. SOLUTION: This control method is provided for an internal combustion engine 10 where reductant storage and supply systems 74, 210 are provided in the emission control system 72. It comprises a step of collating the physical condition relating to the reductant storage device 74 corresponding to the amount of liquid stored in the reductant storage device 74 for the reductant storage and supply system 72, with the property of fluid stored in the reductant storage device 74, and determining the usability of the stored fluid and an alternative means, and a step of controlling the operated condition of the internal combustion engine 10 in accordance with the collation.
