Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low molecular weight arabinogalactan prepared from natural arabinogalactan at a low cost, to provide a method for easily producing the low molecular weight arabinogalactan at low cost, further, to provide an inexpensive surfactant using the low molecular weight arabinogalactan as a raw material, and to provide a method for producing the surfactant. SOLUTION: The method for producing the low molecular weight arabinogalactan with a molecular weight of 1,000-4,000 comprises the following process, wherein using natural arabinogalactan derived from a plant belonging to the genus Larix as a raw material, the natural arabinogalactan is subjected to decomposition treatment such as hydrothermal decomposition treatment, acidolysis treatment, alkalinolysis treatment or physical decomposition treatment.
