Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new bacterial population for dechlorinating PCB and a bacterium. SOLUTION: The bacterial population for dechlorinating polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins has the following properties of (1) including a bacterium of the genus Dehalobacter as a bacterium having dechlorination ability, (2) carrying out dechlorination using hydrogen as an electron donor, (3) using acetic acid and carbon dioxide as a carbon source, (4) maintaining dechlorination activity in the presence of nitric acid or sulfuric acid having ≤10 mM and (5) inhibiting dechlorination activity by trivalent iron.
