Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera that has achieved both the visibility of a display monitor and the suppression of power consumption, and a display device luminance control method of a camera. SOLUTION: When an arithmetic circuit 101 receives a half push operation signal from a release switch 141, the arithmetic circuit 101 determines brightness around a camera 1 detected by a photometric sensor 153. The arithmetic circuit 101 controls a backlight driving part 162 so as to turn on a backlight 7b by any of luminances A to D in accordance with the determined ambient brightness during receiving the half push operation signal from the release switch 141. When the magnitudes of luminance values of respective luminance levels are compared, the result is luminance A<luminance B<luminance C<luminance D. When the arithmetic circuit 101 later can not receive the half push operation signal from the release switch 141, or when the arithmetic circuit 101 receives a full push operation signal, the arithmetic circuit 101 controls the backlight driving part 162 so as to turn on the backlight 7b with luminance A.
