Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for manufacturing a ferroelectric liquid crystal element which can prevent mixture of a seal material component into liquid crystal and prevent the liquid crystal from being leaked from the seal material. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of the ferroelectric liquid crystal element successively comprises: a seal material application process for applying a seal material at least to one of a pair of substrates; a liquid crystal application process for applying the liquid crystal at least to one of the pair of substrates, a substrate bonding process for bonding the pair of substrates to hold the ferroelectric liquid crystal between the substrates, and a depression process for depressing the pair of bonded substrates so as to form a required interval between the substrates. In the substrate bonding process, both the substrates are bonded at a temperature at which the ferroelectric liquid crystal indicates a smectic phase and the seal material is brought into contact with the ferroelectric liquid crystal in a temporarily cured state.
