PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation device capable of automatically adjusting its luminance, turning on a back light and the like in interlocking with user's operating motion, for example, opening and closing motion of an opening and closing cover, and improving visibility and operability. SOLUTION: This operating device for operating a prescribed apparatus, comprises a display portion for displaying prescribed information, a measuring portion for measuring illumination intensity around the device, and an adjusting portion for adjusting the luminance of the display portion on the basis of a degree of change of a value of illumination intensity obtained by the measurement.
