Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of carrying out control of image forming conditions with higher precision, by correcting the effects due to dark decay in an image carrier. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 100 is constituted so that the operating conditions for discharge means 12, 14 and 15b are changed into a plurality of different operating conditions, and a surface of the image carrier 10 which has passed the position of the discharge means of acting on the image carrier 10, under each respective operating condition, is charged by a charging means 11 and the image formation conditions are changed, based on the result of the potential on the surface of the charged image carrier 10, which is detected by a surface potential detecting means 17.
