PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material originated from a natural product, and having activities for inhibiting the increase of a blood glucose level, and to provide a health food and a medicine containing the material. SOLUTION: The inhibitor of the blood glucose level increase contains rhamnan sulfate as an active ingredient. Preferably, the rhamnan sulfate is obtained by extraction from Monostroma nitidum of the genus Monostroma of Monostromataceae of green alga. The food and drink for inhibiting the blood glucose level increase and the medicine for inhibiting the blood glucose level increase contain the inhibitor of the blood glucose level increase.
