Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform auto-purge treatment for discharging, if a sheet in a guide path is not conveyable, a sheet conveyable through the inside of a guide path through a discharge path from the middle of the guide path. SOLUTION: This sheet conveying device 111 comprises a paper conveying path 149 for guiding sheets, a pair of vertical pass rollers 147 for conveying the sheets in the paper conveying path, and an auto purge conveying path 190 branched from the paper conveying path and discharging and guiding and discharging the sheets. The sheet conveying device further comprises a flapper 195 installed at the branched point X of a paper conveying path and the auto purge conveying path and selectively changing the sheets between the downstream side of the paper conveying path and the auto purge conveying path. The flapper is changed to the auto purge conveying path when receiving the information on no allowance of conveyance from which the flapper cannot convey the sheet to the downstream side of the flapper, and guides the sheet conveyable in the paper conveying path to the auto purge conveying path.
