PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a long-life backlight used for a liquid crystal display or the like, and using a hot cathode fluorescent lamp (hereinafter called HCFL). SOLUTION: This backlight is provided with: a back frame 1b having an opening 1b1, a bottom part 1b2 and a side part 1b3; an optical surface material 4 arranged on the opening 1b1 side of the back frame 1b; and the HCFLs 3 arranged in the back frame 1b to set at least either of a distance D2 to the bottom part 1b2 of the back frame 1b or a distance D1 to the optical surface material 4 not larger than 3.0 mm. The HCFL 3 has a pair of filaments 34a and 34b arranged on nearly the same plane, and the pair of filaments 34a and 34b are arranged generally in parallel to the bottom part 1b2 of the back frame 1b, and the optical surface member 4.
