Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cooling device for an engine capable of maximizing engine efficiency by controlling the temperature of the engine, and cooling recirculated exhaust gas by an economical method. SOLUTION: The cooling device for the internal combustion engine 1 comprises an electronically controlled flow control valve 2 for selectively controlling the flow of a coolant flowing through the engine. The flow control valve 2 can control the cooling of the engine 1 irrespective of the rotating speed of a pump 4 used to urge the coolant to flow into the engine 1. An exhaust gas cooler 5 for an exhaust recirculation device related to the engine 1 is adapted to receive a supply of the coolant from a position located upstream of an electronically controlled flow control valve 2, 20 so that, when the electronically controlled flow control valve 2, 20 is closed to restrict the flow of the coolant through the engine 1, a flow rate through the exhaust gas cooler is automatically increased.
