Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for removing volatile substances which can remove volatile substances more efficiently by volatilizing the volatile substances from solid substances with the volatile substances mixed. SOLUTION: Soil contaminated with volatile organic compounds and the like is mixed uniformly with inorganic compounds that undergo exothermic reaction with water while sufficiently grain-refining them with the use of a grain refining and mixing unit 100. Subsequently, the mixture is added to an air contact treatment unit 200. In an air contact treatment part 210 of the air contact treatment unit 200, volatile organic compounds and the like are volatilized and purified from contaminated soil within a cylindrical part 211. At this time, a predetermined amount of at least a portion of the mixture is lifted via a projecting part 212 with the rotation of the cylindrical part 211 and then caused to fall. Thus, unlike a conventional technology involving simple agitation, not only the surface but also the inside of the mixture can be caused to come into contact with air more efficiently and thus purification efficiency of contaminated soil can be elevated.
